HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF BECOMING A FREEMASON?
YOU WOULD BE MADE MOST WELCOME IF YOU
JOINED OWERS LIGHT LODGE IN CHICHESTER
We welcome new members so please browse the site and if you feel you would like to find out how to become a Freemason or just more about Freemasonry in general, please contact us by clicking here. We will happily answer your questions and provide you with further information.
As is mentioned on the ‘History of the Lodge’ page, Owers Light Lodge was founded in 1961, mainly from a group of Freemasons with a very real interest in sailing. Today our membership is more eclectic with an age range from the 30’s to over 90. However, whatever our individual occupation, wealth, religious choices, colour, creed or sexual preferences, we are all equal as Brothers.
Our members may have joined Freemasonry for different reasons but they would all agree that the fellowship and mutual support is the most important aspect of belonging to this wonderful fraternity. Spending time with like-minded Brethren in the Lodge and after, enjoying their company for a few drinks and a meal.
In our meetings, we practise and perform age-old rituals based upon the story of the building of King Solomon’s Temple at Jerusalem. Our ceremonies are designed to teach and remind us of important truths about our relationship with each other and to the world at large, offering members the opportunity to participate with a sense of continuity with the past, and the satisfaction of performing ritual well as part of self-development in the here and now.
Religion, along with Politics, is never discussed in the Lodge. However, if you want to become a Freemason it is a prerequisite that you have a belief in a “Supreme Being” although what form this takes is entirely the affair of each and every individual.
We hope to attract decent, trustworthy men, of at least 21 years of age who, irrespective of colour race religion or sexual preference, are committed to bettering their own lives and those of others.
Freemasonry is second only to the National Lottery in charitable giving and 50% of Freemasons’ donations are directed towards non-Masonic charities. This in essence means that aside from your annual Lodge dues, you will be encouraged to contribute to Lodge charities which go to help the less fortunate or able of us in society.
We meet at the Masonic Centre, 7 South Pallant, Chichester PO19 1SY and dine on site. Meetings normally start around 17.30hrs and we sit down to dine at 19.45hrs.
Currently we have 5 regular meetings a year on the fourth Friday of the month in February, March (Installation), April, October and November. If you ultimately wish to progress towards becoming Master of the Lodge, you will want to attend many of our Lodges of Instruction which take place monthly from September to May. They are by no means mandatory but they do enable you to learn and practise the ritual in a friendly environment while getting to know your fellow Freemasons.
To join Freemasonry you will need a proposer and a seconder. If you don’t know any Freemasons we can arrange an informal meeting with you. If, by mutual agreement, it is then decided that your application should proceed you will be interviewed by a Lodge committee and the Lodge will then vote on the proposal for you to join us at Owers Light. This process can take anything between three months and a year. So if you do feel you would like to become a Freemason, have any questions or want further information, please contact us by clicking here.
