Owers Light Lodge No. 7756 – Brief History
Consecrated on the 25th March 1961, Owers Light Lodge consisted predominantly of Freemasons with a yachting interest. On that day in 1961, no less than 212 Freemasons gathered in the Chichester Masonic Centre in The Hornet to witness the Consecration.
The Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Arthur Jolly, JP conducted the ceremony assisted by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master VW Bro Rev. Charles H. Mosse MA, two Assistant Provincial Grand Masters, W Bros A. Edwards and H. Middleburgh. The Provincial Grand Secretary, W Bro Harold Myerscough OBE and the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies and his Deputy also attended.
Since then the Lodge has evolved into one of an eclectic mix of Masons covering virtually all walks of life. We have moved to the current Masonic Centre in South Pallant and meet there on the Fourth Friday of February, March (our Installation meeting). April, October and November. Every effort is made to produce good ritual and floor-work but always with a sense of humour accompanying the dignity inherent on these occasions. We hold a Lodge of Instruction monthly from September through to May, which is always attended by over 60% of the Lodge membership.
One of the Lodge’s qualities is its genuine keenness to raise funds for local charities, which might otherwise receive little support outside their own fundraising. Each year the Worshipful Master selects a local charity to benefit from the monies raised throughout his year in office. This is in addition to the monies raised at our Trafalgar Night meeting in October, which always goes to a nautical charity, again locally.
Shown at the top of the page is a picture of an early Owers Lightship and the later replacement ship along with pictures of the Selsey Lifeboat crew carrying out a Christmas ‘turkey run’. Sadly, the Owers Lightship no longer exists – the area is marked by an automatic light beacon.
